Measurement of radioactivity in the environment - Soil - Part 7: In situ measurement of gamma-emitting radionuclides (ISO/FDIS 18589-7:2025)

ISO 18589-7:2013 specifies the identification of radionuclides and the measurement of their activity in soil using in situ gamma spectrometry with portable systems equipped with germanium or scintillation detectors. ISO 18589-7:2013 is suitable to rapidly assess the activity of artificial and natural radionuclides deposited on or present in soil layers of large areas of a site under investigation. ISO 18589-7:2013 can be used in connection with radionuclide measurements of soil samples in the laboratory (ISO 18589‑3) in the following cases: · routine surveillance of the impact of radioactivity released from nuclear installations or of the evolution of radioactivity in the region; · investigations of accident and incident situations; · planning and surveillance of remedial action; · decommissioning of installations or the clearance of materials. It can also be used for the identification of airborne artificial radionuclides, when assessing the exposure levels inside buildings or during waste disposal operations. Following a nuclear accident, in situ gamma spectrometry is a powerful method for rapid evaluation of the gamma activity deposited onto the soil surface as well as the surficial contamination of flat objects.

Water quality - Determination of total bound nitrogen (ST-TNb) in water using small-scale sealed tubes - Part 1: Dimethylphenol colour reaction (ISO 23697-1:2023)

This document specifies a method for the determination of total bound nitrogen (ST-TNb) in water of various origins: groundwater, surface water, and wastewater, in a measuring range of concentration generally between 0,5 mg/l and 220 mg/l of ST-TNb using the small-scale sealed tube method. Different measuring ranges of small-scale sealed tube methods can be required. The measuring ranges can vary depending on the type of small-scale sealed tube method of different manufacturers. It is up to the user to choose the small-scale sealed tube with the appropriate application range or to adapt samples with concentrations exceeding the measuring range of a test by preliminary dilution. NOTE The results of a small-scale sealed tube are most precise in the middle of the application range of the test. All small-scale sealed tube methods are based on a heated alkaline potassium persulfate oxidation in a heating block. Different digestion temperatures, 100 °C or 120 °C or 170 °C, and different digestion times are applicable. Dimethylphenol colour reactions are applied, depending on the typical operating procedure of the small-scale sealed tube used, see Clause 9.

Water quality - Gross alpha and gross beta activity - Test method using liquid scintillation counting (ISO/DIS 11704:2025)

This document specifies a method to measure gross alpha and gross beta activity concentration for alphaand beta-emitting radionuclides using Liquid Scintillation Counting (LSC). The method is applicable to all types of waters with a dry residue of less than 5 g·l-1and when no correction for colour quenching is necessary. The method is applicable to test samples non-saline waters following proper sampling, handling and preparation. Gross alpha and beta measurements do not provide the exact radioactive content of a sample but estimate activity based on standard calibration sources. These measurements, known as the alpha and beta index, serve as screening tools for an initial assessment of total radioactivity. The method covers non-volatile radionuclides below 80 °C, since some gaseous or volatile radionuclides (e.g. radon and radioiodine) can be lost during the source preparation. The method is applicable to test samples of drinking water, rain water, surface and ground water as well as cooling water, industrial water, domestic and industrial waste water after proper sampling and test sample preparation (filtration when necessary and taking into account the amount of dissolved material in the water). The detection limit depends on the sample volume, the instrument used, the background count rate, the detection efficiency and the counting time. The detection limit of the method described in this document, using currently available liquid scintillation apparatus, is approximately 20 mBq·kg-1(α) and 100 mBq·kg-1(β), which is lower than the WHO criteria for safe consumption of drinking water 500 mBq·kg-1(α) and 1 000 mBq·kg-1(β).[4] This value can typically be achieved with a counting time of 500 min for a test sample volume of 0,08 l. The method described in this document is applicable in the event of an emergency situation, because the results can be obtained in less than 4 h by directly measuring water test samples without any treatment.

Inorganic fertilizers and liming materials - Determination of specific elements - Determination of cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, nickel and zinc by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) after aqua regia dissolution

This document specifies a method for the determination of the content of cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, nickel and zinc in fertilizers and liming materials using inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) after aqua regia dissolution. Limits of quantification are dependent on the sample matrix as well as on the instrument, but can roughly be expected to be 0,3 mg/kg for Cd and 1 mg/kg for Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn. This document is applicable to the fertilizing products blends where a blend is a mix of at least two of the following components: fertilizers, liming materials, soil improvers, growing media, inhibitors, plant biostimulants and where the following category: inorganic fertilizers and liming materials is the highest % in the blend by mass or volume, or in the case of liquid form by dry mass. If inorganic fertilizers and liming materials is not the highest % in the blend, the European Standard for the highest % of the blend applies. In case a fertilizing product blend is composed of components in equal quantity, the user decides which standard to apply. NOTE 1 The term fertilizer is used throughout this document and needs to be taken to include liming materials unless otherwise indicated. NOTE 2 Dissolution by aqua regia is equivalent to digestion and extract and digest are equivalent terms in this sense for the purposes of this standard.
